Las Fallas de Valencia

Parade floats, fallera’s, mascletas, … or Las Fallas! This is the largest and most famous festival of Valencia. Every year thousands of people from all over the world come to Valencia to experience this huge event.

Praalwagens, fallera’s, mascletas… oftewel Las Fallas! Dit is het grootste en bekendste feest van Valencia. Elk jaar komen er duizenden mensen van overal ter wereld om dit evenement mee te maken.

When / Wanneer

Las Fallas officially begins the last Sunday of February with an opening festival “La Crida ‘at Torres de Serrano and ends on 19 March with’ La Crema ‘, the burning of more than 600 images (wood and styrofoam). The biggest celebrations take place between 15 and 19 March. Before people also celebrate for weeks.

Las Fallas begint officieel de laatste zondag van februari met een openingsfeest ‘La Crida’ bij Torres de Serrano en eindigt op 19 maart met ‘La Crema’; het verbranden van ruim 600 beelden (van hout en piepschuim). De grootste feesten barsten los tijdens tussen 15 en 19 maart. Daarvoor wordt er ook al wekenlang feest gevierd.

The origin / De oorsprong

The origins of Fallas can be found in the Middle Ages. Carpenters celebrated the beginning of spring by wooden planks where they hung their candles on, and put them on fire. They did this to celebrate this light, that they no longer needed. It was becoming increasingly more light every day. Later these boards became more real sculptures and figures. Today the sculptures can be up to 30 meters high. The most expensive sculptures can be against the 1 million cost.

De oorsprong van Fallas ligt in de middeleeuwen. Timmermannen vierden het begin van de lente door houten planken waar ze hun kaarsen aan hingen, in de brand staken. Dit deden ze om te vieren dat ze dit licht niet meer nodig hadden. Het werd namelijk steeds langer licht. Later zijn deze planken steeds meer op echte beelden en figuren gaan lijken. Tegenwoordig zijn de beelden soms wel 30 meter hoog. De duurste beelden kunnen wel tegen de 1 miljoen euro kosten.

Highlights / Hoogtepunten

From 15 March to 19 March the Fallas party is bursting really loose. It is a week long celebration with great parties everywhere in the city. Tthere are music performances, DJs, paella cooking competitions on the street, lots of booze, churros and lots of fireworks. Furthermore, there are many parades over the weekend with different themes and they are ended with mascletas and decorative fireworks.

Vanaf 15 maart tot en met 19 maart barst het Fallas feest pas echt los. Het is een week lang één groot feest met overal in de stad muziek optredens, dj’s, paella kookwedstrijden op straat, veel drank, churros en heel veel vuurwerk. Verder zijn er in het weekend veel optochten met verschillende thema’s en deze worden afgesloten met mascletas en siervuurwerk.

Some highlights are:

• Mascleta Napolitana at the Las Arenas beach;
• The offering of flowers to the Virgen de los Desamparados (the Virgin of the needy)
• Bullfighting
• Nit del Foc (Night of Fire). This is the largest fireworks show during Fallas and takes place in the Turia park.
• Cabalgata del fuego. This is a parade with lots of fire (work).
• Lighting in the streets of Russafa

Enkele hoogtepunten zijn:
• Mascleta Napolitana op het strand Las Arenas;
• Het aanbieden van bloemen aan de Virgen de los Desamparados (de heilige maagd van de hulpbehoevenden)
• Stierengevechten
• Nit del Foc (Nacht van het vuur). Dit is de grootste vuurwerkshow tijdens Fallas en vindt plaats in het Turia park.
• Cabalgata del fuego. Dit is een optocht met veel vuur(werk).
• Verlichting in de straten van Russafa

Mascleta (bang fireworks show during Fallas / knalvuurwerkshow tijdens Fallas)

From 1 March, every day at 14:00 in the Plaza Ayuntamiento you can see (and especially hear) a fireworks show. This is called the “mascleta”. It are very heavy bangers in certain rhythms. A mascleta you should have experienced at least once in your life, because it is very impressive! A good mascleta has a great body and there are so many rhythms to discover that a lot of people at the end of a mascleta are loud clapping or jumping.

Vanaf 1 maart is er iedere dag om 14:00 op het Plaza Ayuntamiento een vuurwerkshow. Dit wordt de “mascleta” genoemd. Het is erg heftig knalvuurwerk in bepaalde ritmes. Een mascleta moet je in keer in uw leven hebben meegemaakt, want het is heel indrukwekkend! Een goede mascleta heeft een geweldige opbouw en er zijn ritmes in te ontdekken, zodat veel mensen aan het eind van een mascleta hard meeklappen of springen.

08.00 opening of all the Fallas.
At the Plaza del Ayuntamiento: Mascleta finds a place at 14.00.
The prices for the child Fallas are issued at 16.30 hours on the stand for the town, “Plaza Ayuntamiento”. Among the categories are: presentation, parade etc.
22.30 – Traditional dance and song in front of the Ayuntamiento (Town Hall) of Valencia, made possible by the “Federacion folklore”.
At 01.00 pm there is a color fireworks spectacle to behold above the “Paseo de la Alameda”, near metro Alameda.

08.00 uur opening van alle Fallas.
Op Plaza del Ayuntamiento vindt een Mascleta plaats om 14.00 uur.
De prijzen voor de kinder Fallas worden uitgereikt om 16.30 uur op de tribune voor het gemeentehuis, “Plaza Ayuntamiento”. Enkele categorieën zijn: presentatie, optocht etc.
22.30 uur – Traditionele dans en zang voor het Ayuntamiento (gemeentehuis) van Valencia, mogelijk gemaakt door de “Federación Folklóre”.
Om 01.00 uur is er een kleuren vuurwerkspektakel te aanschouwen boven de “Paseo de la Alameda”, ter hoogte van metrohalte Alameda.

The burning of the “Fallas Infantiles” will take place at 22:00. These are the sculptures that you can find in different streets.

At 00.00 pm, all Fallas burned.

At 01.00 pm there is a fire spectacle to see the Plaza Ayuntamiento, also here is the final Falla burned.

Om 11.00 uur op de brug (puente) ‘San José’ worden bloemen aangeboden door de ‘Fallera Mayor’, dit gebeurt voor het beeld van de “Patriarca”.
Om 12.00 uur is er een mis in de kathedraal van Valencia ter ere van San José. Deze zal geleidt worden door de aartsbisschop van Valencia; bisschop Carlos Osoro Sierra. Aangeboden door het officiele bestuur van Fallas en de veriniging van timmerlieden en artiesten,met behulp van de Falla burgemeesters.
Er zal gezongen worden door het koor van de Kathedraal en het orkest van de conservatorium José Iturbi.
Op het Plaza del Ayuntamiento vindt een Mascleta plaats om 14.00 uur.
Om 19.00 uur is de ‘Vuur’ optocht. Deze start bij Calle Ruzafa, vervolgens door calle Colon en eindigt bij ‘Porta de la Mar’. Deze optocht is zeer spectaculair met veel ‘echt’ vuur en zeker de moeite waard om te bekijken.
De verbranding van de “Fallas Infantiles” vindt plaats om 22.00 uur. Dit zijn de beelden die gemaakt zijn en in verschillende straten staan.
Om 22.30 uur vindt de verbranding van de Falla Infantil plaats die de eerste prijs heeft gewonnen.
Om 23.00 uur wordt de Falla Infantil op het Plaza Ayuntamiento verbrand.
Om 00.00 uur worden alle Fallas verbrand.
Om 00.30 uur wordt de Falla (van de volwassenen) die de eerste prijs heeft gewonnen verbrand.
Om 01.00 uur is er een vuur spectakel te zien op het Plaza Ayuntamiento, tevens wordt hier de laatste Falla verbrand.
