After Kim and I spent our day in Altea, we took the bus for just a fifteen minute drive to the grand resort area, Benidorm. We arrived around 5 pm. It was very busy, and there was especially a striking number of young people. For those who do not know: Benidorm is in Belgium known as wintering destination for the elderly people, because it offers a huge range of tourist accommodation and recreation. Benidorm also has a pleasant climate with mild winters making it pretty much the dream destination for this ‘winter escapers’. Whether Benidorm is still a dream destination now, is debatable, because the mass tourism has put its mark quite strongly everywhere in the city. Today Benidorm has a reputation of being the “New York” or “Las Vegas” of Spain (therefor it is nicknamed Beni-York), because of the many skyscrapers, casinos, strip clubs and bars. For us, the whole atmosphere was an attraction on itself, and that was the reason why this place was for us a “must-see” on our trip. Nothing more, nothing less. As soon as you arrive, you actually want to leave again … But I don’t regret visiting Benidorm at all! I had to see this famous seaside town with my own eyes!!!

Nadat Kim en ik dus onze dag spendeerden in Altea, namen we de bus voor amper een kwartiertje rijden richting de grootse badplaats, Benidorm. Daar arriveerden we rond 17 uur. Het was er heel druk, en er was vooral opvallend veel jong volk. Voor wie het nog niet weet: Benidorm staat in België vooral bekend als overwinteringsbestemming voor bejaarden, omdat het een gigantisch aanbod in toeristische accommodatie en recreatie biedt. Benidorm heeft bovendien ook een aangenaam klimaat met zachte winters waardoor het zowat de gedroomde bestemming is voor deze overwinteraars. Of dit inmiddels nog zo is, valt te betwisten, want het massatoerisme heeft zijn sporen zo hier en daar wel stevig nagelaten. Vandaag heeft Benidorm de reputatie het “New York” of “Las Vegas” van Spanje te zijn, vanwege de vele wolkenkrabbers, casino’s, stripclubs en bars. Voor ons was de hele atmosfeer op zich al een attractie, en dat was dan ook de reden waarom dit voor ons “een must-see” was op onze trip. Meer dan dat is het ook niet: zogauw als je er arriveert, wil je eigenlijk alweer vertrekken… Maar ik heb geen spijt! Ik moest en zou deze befaamde badplaats even gezien hebben!!!

Anyway, we checked in at Hotel El Pueblo Benidorm, where we spent the night in a double room with half board. We could book it for an attractive price. This type of hotel is the typical example of the many resorts that can be found here.

Enfin, we checkten in bij Hotel El Pueblo Benidorm, waar we voor een interessante prijs een overnachting in een tweepersoonskamer in half pension konden boeken. Dit type hotel is het typische voorbeeld van de vele resorts die je hier vind.

And because the sun was still out in the sky, we decided to go out for some exploring, even though we were already quite tired from our day in Altea. We walked through Playa de Levante to the Mirador, the most postcard-worthy place in Benidorm. Here you have a beautiful view of both Playa de Levante and Playa Poniente. The Mirador is the place that separates the two beaches.

Gezien de zon nog steeds aan de hemel stond, besloten we even op verkenning te gaan, ook al waren we eigenlijk al best moe van ons dagje in Altea. We wandelen via Playa de Levante naar de Mirador, de meest postkaart-waardige plek in Benidorm. Hier heb je immers een prachtig uitzicht over zowel Playa de Levante en Playa Poniente. De Mirador is de plek die de scheiding vormt tussen deze twee stranden.

We made a lot of great pictures and by that time the sun was going down, which caused even more beautiful visual effects.

We maakten er heel wat mooie foto’s en inmiddels was de zon ook aan het ondergaan, wat voor nog meer mooie beeldeffecten zorgde.

Then we walked back to the hotel. There a great buffet was expecting us! But that was in retrospect not so great: everything looked good, but once you taste it, you realize that this huge catering kitchen is really not so tasty all. I prefer a small cozy restaurant where you might pay more, but also get more taste in your plate! 😉

Daarna wandelden we rustig terug naar het hotel. Daar wachtte ons een groot buffet! Maar dat bleek achteraf gezien niet zo “groots” te zijn: alles ziet er lekker uit, maar zo gauw je het proeft, realiseer je je dat grootkeuken echt wel te proeven valt. Geef ons dan toch maar een klein gezellig restaurantje waar je misschien wel meer betaalt, maar ook wel meer smaak in je bord proeft! 😉

And of course… We have spotted some “Benidorm Bastards” (Belgian tv-show which is called “Off their rockers” in USA) on our way…

En natuurlijk hebben we enkele “Benidorm Bastards” (naar de Belgische tv-serie) gespot onderweg… 

The dessert was moreover not eatable, in my opinion. And I also immediately decided never to stay in large hotels like this resort. Not for me!

Het dessert was overigens echt niet te eten, naar mijn mening. En daarbij besloot ik ook meteen om nooit meer in grootschalige hotels zoals dit resort te overnachten. Niks voor mij!

Incidentally, we had an evening with a lot of fun, with the sight of the mass of people who were amused by the hotel animation. I also noticed that I was actually the exception in this hotel, because it turned out that I seemed the only one who thought this was NOT fun.

We hadden ’s avonds overigens wel veel plezier met het aanschouwen van de massa mensen die zich amuseerde bij de animatie. Ik constateerde daarbij ook dat ik eigenlijk de uitzondering was in dit hotel, want ik bleek de enige te zijn die dit NIET leuk vond.

Oh well, who cares … We experienced it! It was a ‘once in a lifetime’, in a different meaning!

Ach ja, wat maakt het uit… We hebben het ook eens meegemaakt!

And we ended our evening with a bottle of Piña Colada on the terrace of our room with some music. The atmosphere you create yourself! I ever heard that somewhere!?

En we eindigden onze avond met een fles Piña Colada op ons terrasje met wat muziek. De sfeer, die maak je zelf! Heb ik ooit eens ergens gehoord!

And the next morning we ate a buffet breakfast, with fortunately Churros con Chocolate (my favorite Spanish delicacy).

En de volgende morgen aten we nog een buffet-ontbijtje, met gelukkig wel Churros con Chocolate (mijn favoriete Spaanse lekkernij).

After breakfast, we went for a last walk…

Na het ontbijt, ging we nog voor een laatste wandelingetje…

And did some silly things… (Like pretending to be the touroperating hostess)

En deden we enkele gekke dingen… (Zoals doen alsof we de standplaats hostess waren)
