TRAVELOGUE – Blogpost 4: Day 2 (29/3/13) – Alicante

Friday 29^th of March 2013. Day 2 of THE BIG TRIP, and already two destinations: Altea and Benidorm. (Read more about this in previous posts). After breakfast we strolled around some more in Benidorm, and then me and my friend, Kim, took the bus to Alicante. This bus ride was the perfect opportunity for a powernap, for it was an hour until we reached the city.

Vrijdag 29 maart 2013. Dag 2 van THE BIG TRIP, en alreeds 2 bestemmingen zaten erop: Altea en Benidorm. (Lees meer hierover in de vorige posts). Na het ontbijt en wat rondslenteren in Benidorm, nam ik met mijn vriendin, Kim, de bus richting Alicante. Deze busrit was de ultieme kans voor een mini-dutje, het was immers een uurtje rijden tot we de stad bereikten.

At 2PM we were there then: Alicante! Here we booked a charming boutique hotel, centrally located on the square next to the town hall (Ayuntamiento). The service was excellent and we really liked it!

Om 14 uur waren we daar dan: Alicante! Hier hadden we een charmant boutique-hotelletje gereserveerd, centraal gelegen op het plein bij het stadshuis (ayuntamiento). De service was er uitstekend en het viel reuze goed mee!

We were hungry again, how could it be otherwise, and ate – against all Tapas standards – our lunch at Mc Donalds. To the great joy of Kim (who just loves Mc Donalds)!

We hadden alweer honger, hoe kon het ook anders, en aten – tegen alle Tapas-normen in – onze lunch in Mc Donalds. Tot grote blijdschap van Kim (die gek is op Mc Donalds)!

Then we just strolled along the promenade.

Daarna flaneerden we even over de boulevard.

We also visited the famous castle of Alicante, which is located on the hill: Santa Barbara. From this castle we had a beautiful view over the city, and for that alone it is really worth it!

We bezochten ook het beroemde kasteel van Alicante, dat gelegen is op de heuvel: Santa Barbara. Vanaf dit kasteel heb je een prachtig uitzicht over de stad, en alleen al daarvoor is het echt de moeite waard!

Of course we did not have to climb the whole mountain itself and for barely one euro (or two) we took an elevator that took us to the top in less than a minute (or two).

Natuurlijk hoefden we die hele berg niet zelf op te klimmen en konden we voor amper een euro (of twee) een lift nemen die ons in amper een minuut (of twee) tot boven bracht.

We enjoyed the fantastic scenery, took pictures of each other and enjoyed the sunshine.

We genoten van de fantastische vergezichten, namen foto’s van mekaar en genoten van het zonnetje.

After our visit we went back down, towards the city and our hotel. Our room was fantastic! We had a mini-balcony overlooking the city and even on the castle and the hill. The bed was heavenly, and so our day could not go wrong anymore!

Na ons bezoek trokken we terug naar beneden, richting de stad en ons hotel. Onze kamer was echt fantastisch! We hadden een mini-balkonnetje met uitzicht op het stadshuis en zelfs zich over het kasteel en de heuvel. Het bed was zalig, en onze dag kon dus nu al niet meer stuk!

We decided to stroll around some further through the city, and drank a Piña Colada somewhere.

We besloten nog wat verder rond te kuieren door de stad, en dronken ergens een Piña Colada.

We found out that there took a clothing and footwear market place at the harbor, and went there to look around. To our own surprise we have not bought anything! (And no, it was not the merchandise, that looked very nice and well priced!).

We ontdekten dat er een kledij- en schoenenmarktje plaatsvond aan de haven, en gingen daar even rondkijken. Tot onze eigen verbazing hebben we er niets gekocht! (En nee, het lag niet aan het koopwaar, want dat was overigens zeer mooi en goed geprijsd!).

Around time of sunset we walked as two romantic, lost souls on the pier and we enjoyed the view. While the men enjoyed our view, I think … Because we got a lot of attention, the two of us! 😉

Bij zonsondergang wandelden we als twee romantische, verdwaalde zielen over de pier en genoten we van het uitzicht. Terwijl de mannen van ons uitzicht genoten, denk ik… Want we hadden weeral veel bekijks, wij twee! 😉

But we had enough fun, just with the two of us, and so there was no men in order to amuse us! And we put on our successful day with a delicious Mexican dinner, and a glass of tinto de verano (red wine or sangria mixed with sparkling water). Really relaxed. And Burgundian. That especially! And if we had not eaten enough, Kim ate a cotton candy at a local fairground booth!

Maar wij hadden genoeg pret onder ons en dus geen mannen nodig om ons te kunnen amuseren! En we zetten onze geslaagde dag verder met een heerlijk Mexicaans dinertje, en een glaasje tinto de verano (sangria of rode wijn met bruiswater gemixt). Echt relaxed. En Bourgondisch. Dat laatste vooral! En alsof we nog niet genoeg gegeten hadden, at Kim nog een suikerspin aan een plaatselijk kermiskraam!

We walked around and stumbled by chance on a procession! The street was closed in front of us and so we were unexpectedly witnesses of a religious tour. Actually, It was to be expected, because at this time of the year, it was Semana Santa, the holy week before Easter.

We wandelden wat rond en stootten bij toeval op een processie! De straat werd voor onze neus afgesloten en zo werden wij onverwachts getuigen van een religieuze rondgang. Het was natuurlijk wel te verwachten, want het was Semana Santa: de heilige week voor Pasen.

There are religious processions organized in which many brotherhoods (in Spanish: Hermandades or Cofradias) remember the suffering of Christ. Each fraternity has its own church and their own sacred images, Maria and Christ, propagated. During this week, the platforms on which the sculptures are to be worn by the members of the brotherhood (costaleros). Because the sacredsculptures are assisted by ‘nazarenos’ (penitents) a procession route takes many hours. There are also ‘ musical bands’ walking along which the procession and they guide the crowds passionately (the instruments with the Jesus sculpture are only drums and trumpets while María is assisted by a full orchestra, however, without the string instruments).

Er worden religieuze processies georganiseerd waarin de vele broederschappen (in het Spaans: hermandades of cofradias) het lijden van Christus gedenken. Elke broederschap kent een eigen kerk en tijdens deze week worden hun heilige beelden, Maria en Christus, uitgedragen. De plateau´s waarop de beelden staan worden gedragen door de leden van de broederschap (costaleros). Omdat de heilige beelden worden bijgestaan door ‘nazarenos’ (boetelingen) duurt een processieroute vele uren. Ook lopen er ‘muziekkorpsen’ mee die passievol de stoet begeleiden (de instrumenten bij het Jezus beeld zijn alleen trommels en trompetten terwijl María bijgestaan wordt door een heel orkest, echter, zonder de strijkinstrumenten). 

Useful vocabulary / Handig woordenlijstje:

• Semana Santa: holy week before Easter / heilige week voor Pasen
• Nazarenos: penitents (Since 1987 women may also participate as ‘Nazarenas’) / boetelingen (Sinds 1987 mogen ook vrouwen als ‘nazarenas’ meelopen)
• Saeta: religious flamenco singing / religieuze flamenco zang
• Hermandad: fraternity (mix of social groups, ethnicity and occupation) / broederschap (mix van sociale groepen, afkomst en beroep)
• Cofradia: fraternity (only among certain groups such as fishermen or traders) / broederschap (uitsluitend van bepaalde groep zoals vissers of handelaren)

The arrival of La Carreteria on Good Friday is really worth waching because of the high difficulty level. It is the most popular procession during the whole week of Semana Santa. Read more about this particular procession at: http://www.traditioninaction.org/religious/a026rpMacarena.htm

De thuiskomst van La Carreteria op Goede Vrijdag is de moeite waard vanwege de hoge moeilijkheidsgraad. Het is de meest populaire processie uit de hele periode. Lees er meer over (in het Engels) op de bovenvermelde website.

As you can see and experience a little bit in the movie, this is a very special ritual! Very unique and fun to experience in real life. We were pleased and fascinated witnesses…

Zoals u op het filmpje wel een beetje kunt zien of ervaren, is het een heel bijzonder ritueel! Heel uniek en leuk om ook eens meegemaakt te hebben. Wij waren alvast tevreden en gefascineerde toeschouwers…

To close the day (or night by that time) we went to sit on a terrace – again –, and so we closed our successful week of holiday together with a milkshake.

Om de dag (of de nacht inmiddels) af te sluiten, zochten we nogmaals – tot vergeefs toe – een terrasje op, en zo sloten we onze geslaagde week vakantie samen af met een milkshake.

It became very late and the next day Kim’s train headed in the direction of Valencia, for a flight home to Belgium. I would be picked up by my tour group to continue the big trip towards Granada. Undoubtely the highlight of Andalusia. Why? Therefor I refer to the following blog post! So definitely keep on reading!

Het werden dus late uurtjes en de volgende dag zou Kim haar trein nemen richting Valencia, voor een vlucht huiswaarts richting België. Ik zou opgepikt worden door mijn reisgezelschap om de trip verder te zetten richting Granada. Ongetwijfeld hét hoogtepunt van Andalucië. Waarom? Dat leest u in de volgende blogpost! Dus zeker blijven lezen!!
